Hi everyone!
Having made my share of mistakes, I can safely say that the biggest one an internet marketer can make is getting too excited. Hopefully, the mistakes I made will allow you to not waste as much time as I did.
My professional career before I began to work online had generated so much frustration that as an internet marketer, I’ve been litterally overwhelmed with excitment during the first 8 months. I took me that much time to really get a clear vision of what I needed to do to make a living online, let alone making good money.
Here’s the type of thoughts and feelings that typically went through my mind during these first months:
- I need to succeed fast and I can since so many people do out there
- There are so many great opportunities that I need to try as many as I can
- There are programs out there that will guarantee my success, and I need to find them
- Any minute spent educating myself, building a strategy or analysing my own actions is a waste of time since the real key to succeeding online is acting fast
Now, a few examples of what this kind of mindset led me to do:
- sign up for “opportunities” because they look great or have a great reputation, without even knowing what the compensation plan is or what I was supposed to do to make money
- sign up for multiple programs in a short period of time
- joining brand new opportunties thinking it is the only way to make a profit (act fast mindset)
- download free reports or software and never read/use them
- look for free stuff on one hand while spending money inconsiderately on the other
- spend hours on traffic exchanges
- spend all my work time before my screen
These mistakes are almost unavoidable, especially if you are new to the marketing world. Marketers are experts at triggering the most basic gregarious emotional responses. They play with envy, fears, fantasies. They know human flaws and instincts very well, and it is hard to not at least take a look at some new opportunities or systems, since so many pass before our eyes (plus some really ARE good!).
Yet, at some point, you need to be mature enough to domesticate those emotional reactions and actions. You must stay away from the hype, period. If you are guilty of one or more of these “sins”, most likely you will not be a successful online marketer, if you don’t “clean up your act”.
So? How much of your own behaviour have you found in the list above?
Don’t worry. It’s ok to make mistakes. Better yet, I’ll say that mistakes are the ONLY way to evolve and get better. Some of the best educational systems rely on the art of dealing with mistakes. As long as you learn from them, you can’t fail.
Here’s a first thing you can do: make a list of things you do that you think are or might be bad for your business. Then, for each one, try to find the reason why you made this mistake.
The purpose of this exercise is to generate an awareness of how your mind functions while surrounded with business oriented sollicitations. Only this way can you get the necessary perspective to focus on what will be good for you in the long run and take your mind off the subconscious “get rich quick” mode that is so typical of the human psyche (I want it all, and I want it know).
Until next time… cheers,
Damien
